ALLEPPEY: - “Venice of the East”.
Alleppey has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of kerala state. Nature has given this land her richest bounties as acclaimed by Lord Curzon, the British Viceroy to India. Famous for its palm fringed canals, the breath-taking lagoons, backwaters, boat races, beaches, marine and coir products, the pier, which extends into the sea here is about 137 years old fascinates the visitors. This water locked district with long sandy beached is rated as the best Backwater Tourism destination. Ideally located as a base of backwater cruising, Alleppey attracts tourists around the year. The old mansions and trading houses with architectural styles forms an enduring heritage at this place.

VEMBANADU LAKE : - “Biggest Lake in Kerala”
Proudly acclaimed as one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, the ‘Vembanadukayal’, as its is locally known, is a giant reservoir and a major ecological resource. The dense vegetation on its banks is a wonderful sight. The boats that ply on the lake vary from the large cargo carries with mat-roofs to the houseboats.
The sanctuary named after the village is a favorite haunts of migratory birds. There are egrets, darters, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoos, wild ducks and Siberian storks. The best way to watch the birds in the Kumarakom bird sanctuary is a boat trip around the Island.

Coir making is a primary occupation of the village folks. The interesting art of coir making can be seen along the northen sides of backwaters. Mainly women are engaged in this industry. Its delight watch women making coir using the spinning wheel. An indigenous products of Kerala – coir, finds use in many forms like mats, furnishings etc. Master craftsmen create various products in most appealing colures and textures.
